Good Food

There is a selection of very good quality restaurants in the area. The Forge Restaurant, Carnaross; The Naper Arms Hotel, The Square, Oldcastle; Chinese Gourmet Restaurant, The Square, Oldcastle; and Lush Italian Restaurant, Cogan Street, Oldcastle. Further down the road in Kells you will find the Vanilla Pod and Ground Floor restaurants.

County Meath

Causey Farm

The highlight of a holiday – Friday nights at Causey Farm offer an evening of lively music, ancient songs, ceili dancing all in an old stone barn around a warm turf fire.

Walking

If you like to walk through the picturesque countryside, then the Loughcrew Way is an ideal walk of 4 to 8 miles starting in Oldcastle and making your way up to Sliabh na Callighe, you will come across some of the most scenic areas of Counties Meath, Cavan and Westmeath. Music and Craic

Oldcastle itself plays host each week to a number of traditional bands in the local pubs. There is also a night club in Oldcastle town and there are also clubs in Cavan, Kells and Navan, which are only a short taxi ride away.

Annual Music Festivals

Oldcastle plays host to “Le Cheile Music Festival” every August with a weekend filled with well-known stand-up comedians and bands.

There are a number of other music festivals run annually around the Oldcastle area. Each year at Loughcrew we have Opera and Jazz parties. In Mullingar there is the annual summer Country Music Festival.

Local Interests

Loughcrew Cairns (Megalithic Tombs) Europe’s largest group of prehistoric passage graves. St. Oliver’s Church and Graveyard at Loughcrew. St. Oliver Plunkett, a heroic 17th century archbishop who was born here, was convicted of treason, hanged and quartered in the Tower of London after refusing to submit to the fiercely anti-catholic laws of his time.

Gardens

Loughcrew historic gardens, restored 17th and 19th century gardens. Also Tullynally Castle and gardens, Ballinalough Castle and Gardens and Grove Gardens and tropical bird sanctuary.

Shopping

Navan, Cavan and Mullingar Shopping Centres provide excellent shopping less than a half hour away, or Blanchardstown and Liffey Valley centres, less than an hour away.

Equestrian

Oldcastle is in the heart of Meath Equestrian activities. If it’s just a leisurely hack around quiet country roads or an intensive week of hunting, show-jumping, or eventing, it’s all within easy reach.

Golf

Within 40 minutes drive you can reach some of the country’s most challenging courses, including The Slieve Russell, Headfort & Royal Tara, indeed there is a different course for every day of the week.

Fishing

Located in the North West corner of Meath, we are surrounded by the lakes of Cavan and Westmeath, including Lough Sheelin, Lough Ramor, Lough Derraghvara, Lough bane, Lough Lene and the River Blackwater, “any fisherman’s dream”.
